Synopsis:
Derrick (Duane Martin) is a struggling law graduate living in Los Angeles.
Living on his own and struggling to make ends meet, he lets his childhood
best friend E.J. (DeRay Davis) talk him into taking a job as a seat filler,
while he studies for the bar exam. Fate plays a role his first day on
the job, Derrick is seated next to the beautiful superstar, Jhnelle (Kelly
Rowland). They have an instant connection, but as quickly as she appears,
she is gone, leaving both of them to wonder what if?
Several weeks later, Jhnelle spots her mystery man at an awards ceremony
on television and arranges to have her number delivered to him. Derrick,
who she thinks is Al Grant (Eriq LaSalle, “ER,” “Coming
to America”), is ecstatic and contacts her immediately. The unlikely
pair begin dating while Derrick keeps up the charade of being a working
entertainment attorney. While falling in love, close call after close
call ensues almost blowing Derrick’s cover. While his cover is not
blown, his conscience begins to surface along with the guilt of living
a lie. Jhnelle’s ex-boyfriend and soap opera superstar, Trent (Shemar
Moore), finds out about the charade and sets Derrick up at an awards show,
resulting in Jhnelle discovering that her Al Grant is in fact Derrick
Harver, a seat filler.
